A typical bad ebay message.

We sell bell, lots of them.

This is a message I received the other day. Didn’t make any sense as it wasn’t asking for a refund or information…It was just a statement.

“i think i should have looked at the picture properly but there defo not wat i wanted i thought they were big bell things like baubles you stick on the christmas tree x”

Listing clearly states 12mm and wondered what they exactly wanted if anything.

Just received this whilst writing the negative feedback blog.

“i sent a mess few days ago saying i wasnt happy with what i got maybe i should have looked at the picture better but isn’t what i wanted and i wouldnt even pay 50p for this just a waste of money so would like to return these and therefore get a refund”

I give up!!

“i sent a mess” is totally correct

By the way I was expecting a foreign name as the sender of the message as that would be excusable for the unintelligible message but it’s a typically English name.

PS SHE WILL GET A REFUND ONCE SHE RETURNS THEM.  I AIM TO PLEASE.

Negative Feedback Received on Ebay

Over the last year and around the 12,000 sales I have 3 negative feedbacks. My rating is still 100% as so far only 1 in 4000 people have found it necessary to leave negative comments.

Feedback is there for a reason and as a seller I’m happy for it to be there but and it’s a big but….most of the negs have been received not because I’ve made a mistake but because other have made a mistake and are more than willing to blame someone else for it.

ok the latest one

“good packing but took 1 week to arrive.ebayer not recommended!”

This one is by far the worst in my opinion as it’s just so wrong.  Item page states “Estimated within 5-7 working days”.  Well it was ordered on Wednesday night and arrived on the Friday which is 7 working days so in effect it met the terms of the listing but the buyer decided to give negative. Wheres the logic in that. Does that mean I give negative every time a item arrives because i feel it should have been here sooner. I have to admit most people get theirs much sooner but we cannot guarantee this. If you pay second class you get second class mail sent. I have contacted the woman but so far no reply. To me this just seems like “I don’t care that I’ve done wrong it’s your problem” which is why I’ve written this blog “to name and shame”.

My second is one from (please look at my ebay feedback to see this one)

“they sell you broken beads when emailed they dont answer wont be using again!!”

Well in the initial email I received it was 2 out of the 13 beads were broken. I then pointed out that the listing states “There will be a few extra in each packet in case of breakages during postage.” The reply to that was “i read the item description before i purchased the beads as i always do so i dont get cought out!”. Well to be honest how can you read something and then complain that a couple were broken when it said there would be extra in the pack to cover for breakages. Obviously not read or not intelligent to understand what it meant.

My feedback to her feedback was

“2 broken.Listing states “a few added for breakages”. I typically send extra 10%.

Her reply to that was

“no postal breakages~ half of a bead sent~when found wrong sends a shirty email!!”

My shirty emile shes referring to is

“I usually put in or stick on the envelope that I add 10% to the beads sent to cover breakages.
The listing also states “There will be a few extra in each packet in case of breakages during postage”
I’m sorry you feel it necessary to give negative feedback for what was a small problem that was pointed out in the listing and envelope.”

I don’t think this is shirty at all and can only think this is written as a lie to ward people from buying off me.

I actually though her email was shirty and offensive.

“i read the item description before i purchased the beads as i always do so i dont get cought out! i received 13 and a half beads or maybe the other half the bead jumped out of the tiny pack you sent them in ??? so the “I usually put in or stick on the envelope that I add 10% to the beads sent to cover breakages.” must of jumped out too!! i can asure none were broken in the post i just no i wont use you again may be you should stick to what you say “The listing also states “There will be a few extra in each packet in case of breakages during postage” ….waste of time so no more contact thank you “

When I read this certain words come to mind and none of them nice, sorry to say.

Ok the last is

(see ebay feedback)  who put “I woulnt class it as silver glitter more white with glitter in”

Again no contact before leaving negative. And no contact after even though she was still buying. Don’t mind giving feedbac but won’t put an argue

Listing goes

“This is a buy it now for Leeho glitter 3D paints.

Colours are red, purple, green, silver, gold and blue.

These can be used for decorating anything from T-shirts to cards to household objects.
They are permanent and would be a great gift for anyone creative (like student, card makers etc.).
I’ve used them to decorate items and they are simple to use, you squeeze them on, so they give a raised effect. The more you put on the thicker it will dry, giving the 3d effect.
Some images are included to give you examples.
Paint looks milky at first but that then dries clear to just show glitter.”
To me this is just people calling the same thing different names adn to be honest it was never sold as “silver glitter”,  it was sold as 3d glitter paint.
This is not just fro my benefit but to every buyer out there but mainly the good ones. Look at the negatives with a pinch of salt especially if their rating is good (again mine is 100%). I sometime feel people have a bad day at the job/home and the ebay seller seems to get the brunt of the situation.  All of the negatives I feel should have been neutral at worst  as listings were correct.

Very Thick 6mm,4mm,3mm,2mm,1mm. Black Real Leather Cord. Thong-ing.

This is a buy it now for genuine real leather cord.

We have it in the usual 1mm, 2mm and 3mm but also have it in 4mm and massive 6mm (nearly as thick as a pencil).

It can all be use for jewellery making but the 6mm size could be used as handles to bags, drawers, bracelets/wrist bands, belt, horse adornments etc.

I have not noticed any joins and have tugged it to see if it comes apart but over a 3 metre length noticed no problems in strength.

Please note I am not selling it as a strong item but as a decorative item that seems pretty strong. (Don’t tie a anvil to the ceiling with it).

Since this is new and dyed it is possibly worth cleaning with a cloth to remove any residue from the dying and to give it a final shine.

Long Time No Update

Well it’s been ages since I updated this blog and that mainly to do with cracking on with ebay.

If I’m not packing items up for delivery I’m trying to get more items onto it.

Near enough everything else is out the window which is why I haven’t added more content.

Tonight I needed to get away from it and relax a bit so I thought I’d write a bit here.

Because of the demands made by ebay I now shut Friday to help me devote more time to it.

Opening hours are

Tuesday 10 to 5

Wednesday 10 to 2

Thursday 10 to 5

Saturday 10 to 5

Holiday Rundown

Just a rundown on the holiday.

Went on the helium ballon in Bournemouth.

Went to Brownsea Island, Poole to see the Red squirrels.

Last day washed out so went indoors to Beaulieu motor museum.

How Is Business? Pt 1

One of the question often asked is “How is business?”

Business has changed quite a lot in the last 2 year.

There is obviously less money around so people are buying more shrewdly. Where before they would come in and buy several metres of a fabric so they had more than enough, now they are measuring up and calculating what they need. There are still some people who buy the old way by over guesstimating what they need, but they are few on the ground.

To keep our cost down we have now started shopping around to get the best prices on fabrics. Where we use to have one main supplier we now use three to get the best possible prices.

We try to help our customers by selling fabric by the quarter metre. Some places make you buy by  the meter. School projects become a major expense when lots of small pieces are required but whole metres have to be purchased.

There has also been a change in the fabrics we now keep in order to keep the price down. Pattern fur like cheetah, zebra, giraffe etc have recently had a dramatic price increase. To counter this we now sell velboa animal print as an alternative. This is a very short pile fabric, like velvet which although not as hairy as the fur still looks very attractive and in a lot of case nicer than the fur. I’m sure we will be selling lots for school plays, pantomimes and new years eve parties.

Christmas Is Here

Christmas is just around the corner and we have started to sell our Christmas print fabrics along with the usual felt, fur, tartans and poly-cottons.

These can be used to make Christmas stocking, table mats, bunting for walls and Christmas trees, tree decorations, napkins aprons.

We have a selection of ribbons from 7mm to 50mm which have the Christmas theme. These include plain gold/red, green/red to ribbons often bought by card makers which have prints of trees, snowmen, bauble, snowflakes printed on them. Most are wired so can be tied into a bow and placed onto presents, wreaths, trees etc to welcome in the festive season.

T Shirt Printing

We have now been doing T-Shirt printing for a few month and it has been very popular.

Great for special occasions and also work wear.

We can offer a complete service where we get your order and give you back the finished garment.

We also offer a service where we can cut out your design and you can affix the design using a household iron. This works out  cheaper and also means you can attach the design to what you want, when you want. Great for businesses that need to buy in bulk and use when necessary.

We give good discounts for larger orders.

Turnaround is usually a few days although we aim to do most orders for the next day.

Foam For Boats. Measureing Up.

This time of year  we get a few boat owner in trying to update their boats.

Boats are the most complicated to do a good template as the foam is often curved and they have an angle where they meet the hull.

Her is the procedure for making a template.

1. using newspaper or wall paper make the template of the cushionso it fits nicely on the bed/seat.

2. Decide on the size of foam required. Once you know this get books and layer them so the come to the same height as the foam.

3. Put these books at one end of the paper and put against the hull.

4. Measure between the edge of the books and the hull using a rule placed on top of the books.

5. Mark this length on the template.

6. Repeat down the template every 12″.

7. We now have a template for us to follow.

So Long Since The Last Post

Ok sorry for the long delay since the last post but thats because a lot has gone on.

Highlights for last week were doing 180 T-shirts for my daughters school for their “Save the rain forest” awareness week.

They wanted 8 different rain forest animals attached to t shirts they had bought. This they wanted ASAP so the design of each animal was kept as basic as possible. Manage to cut and attach the vinyl to the shirts within a day.

10 Reasons To Choose Us Over Hobbycraft

Since we are thinking about getting a new shop, and we found out that Hobbycraft was going to have a large retail outlet within a couple miles, I thought we would goto our nearest Hobbycraft and have a look at the competition. I went in with apprehension thinking about how the big boys would be cheaper and better but whilst in there found that they mostly were not.

So here’s my top 10 reason to shop at us (or maybe a smaller craft shop near you) rather than Hobbycraft.

  1. Although their fabric range covered a large area the actual fabric was minimal. They had about 5 colours of polycotton we have at least 20.  They had a 4 rolls of felt where we stock around 20. Vinyl, we stock about 25 they had about 5. Dress net we stock about 20 colours they had about 10.  Most people are often after as near a match as possible. In the polycotton range they had 1 blue. We have around 5 from baby blue to navy.  Just because it’s bigger doesn’t mean your going to get the variety you expect.
  2. I guess we’re all conscious about prices especially in todays climate. I found a fair mix of cheaper items than what we sell, more expensive prices that we sell items at, and some the same. Here are a couple of items we sell cheaper. Fimo, Gutermann beads, Gutermann threads, some fabrics, button (they only sold them on packets which made them more expensive and you had to usually buy two packs of 4 even if you only wanted to buy 5. Just because it’s bigger does not make it cheaper.
  3. From what I saw every thing was sold by the meter. In our shop we will sell you the amount you want. If you want quarter of a meter of satin fabric as you want to make a backing to a scarf we will sell you that amount. Even at a sometimes more expensive price we can still be cheaper.
  4. Service. I won’t say I’m brilliant but most of our customers know they can always count on us for helpful service. If you are looking for something we will always give it 100% in showing you all the alternatives. Perhaps your looking for velcro for a duvet but are not sure, i will point out your options, popper, snap tape, buttons, zips. We’re always there to give you help.
  5. Unusual items. As you can see from our ecliptic range of items we are not your run of the mill stockist. We are always sourcing our products from many sources. We have the more off beat items along with the common. We are often called a treasure trove because of the range we stock. Bigger doesn’t mean better.
  6. Whilst at Hobbycraft I saw a great deal. It was “Buy 2 get a 3rd for free …..£1.50 each” and on the shelf was a very large bottle of PVA glue. Cheaper than I could buy them for my shop of the wholesalers. We wandered round and saw this offer a few times. It was only when we came to a stand that had a few different sized PVA glues on it that we took a closer look at the sign. The fine print said “from”. The £1.50 pot of glue was so small it would have lasted 5 minutes. The larger one was £7-£8. Needless to say we didn’t get any. It must be embarrassing for a customer who picks up th large expecting to pay £3 but get charged £15. We will always be straight on prices.
  7. Hobbycrafts to me is shop that is there to make money. That’s it. It stocks the basic lines that bring in the money and the local specialist craft shop is left “Surviving”. From what I’ve gathered most crafter won’t use hobbycarft, much preferring to support their local friendly shop. They know they can get some of their items there at the same price, but when they want specialist parts for their hobby, hobbycraft is very limited. Crafter buy all their craft items from their local supplier as it keeps them in business allowing them to do their crafts in full.
  8. Service. Done this one already. Sorta. A couple of years back after the Christmas shopping in Crawley we decided to go to Hobbycarft. One customer had a query about a price that they had promoted in the store but at the checkout the customer was told bluntly the price ticket was right and no matter what the sign said on the shelf she would not honor it. What got up the customers nose was they were not even willing to look at the sign in the store to check the price. Needless to say they lost a sale and a customer.
  9. We negotiate. If you want to buy items in bulk or if there a price you’ve seen, tell us and we will try to price match or offer you a discount for buying in bulk. Try and do that in Hobbycraft. We are flexible in price.
  10. Not really a proper reason but request to try us and see for yourself.

10 Ways For You To Help Us And Yourself.

We have lots of satisfied customers and are always looking for ways for us to grow. You can help us by….

  1. If you have bought from us and have liked the prices or service please link to us with a comment about us. This can either be by a direct link from your website, tweet, blog, face book or if you participate in a forum by mentioning us with a link. http://ukbeading.co.uk/

  10. Well to plug it again they do a handy thread shade card which allows you to order the exact colour even when you cannot visit us in person

How To Identify Gutermann Thread

If you are trying to identify a Gutermann thread here are the ways to figure it out.

If you are looking at the thread full on it will say Gutermann. Further along on yhe other side it will have the number CA 02776…….This means nothing.

You can tell the type of thread by looking at the colour of the bobbin and checking it with the above pictures. It is also found on the lower ring.

On the bottom ring it will say what the thread is made of and length in meters and yards. Ie    100% polyester  ,  100m   110 yds. On some older threads the colour will be stated there. I.e Col 919

The colour can be found on the top. It will be on a adhesive sticker usually just above a bar-code. Ie Col 800.

On some older ones the colour will be stated there. I.e Col 919
